HomeSafe performs a load calculation on every site visit to confirm sizing. The step from 26kW air-cooled to 38kW liquid-cooled is a meaningful change in installation complexity, physical size, and investment — we'll discuss both options during the site assessment.
Not sure what size you need? See our installation guide →The Kohler 38kW (38RCLC) is where the Kohler lineup crosses into liquid-cooled territory — and the difference from the air-cooled models is immediately apparent in every spec that matters. The turbocharged KOHLER KG2204T engine runs at 1800 RPM rather than the 3600 RPM of the air-cooled line. It delivers 38kW of standby power on both natural gas and liquid propane — no output penalty for fuel choice. And it runs quieter at full load (62 dB(A)) than many air-cooled generators run during their weekly exercise cycle.
The 74 kVA peak motor starting capacity is the standout spec for DFW homeowners with large HVAC systems: it's nearly double the starting capacity of the 26RCA and addresses the primary failure mode of undersized standby generators — inability to start a large compressor motor under hot-weather startup conditions. In North Texas summers, HVAC startup loads are at their highest precisely when the grid is most likely to fail.
The 1800 RPM engine speed is significant beyond noise. Half the shaft speed of an air-cooled generator at the same output means less wear per hour of operation, longer expected service intervals, and a design architecture that sustains rated output under the sustained high-ambient-temperature conditions of a multi-day Texas outage without the thermal limitations of an air-cooled design.
Monitoring is through the RDC2 Controller and Kohler Energy Management App. The 5-year premium warranty includes dealer travel up to 200 miles for service calls — the same coverage as the smaller Kohler models.
